In our digital and global world, we encounter a multitude of foreign-language texts every day – at work, in social media, on the Internet, or even on the menu at our favorite Italian restaurant around the corner. And if our personal language skills are not sufficient, machine translation programs such as Google Translate or DeepL will provide help – in no time and at no cost. So why do we need professional translations at all?

When entrusting a professional translator with this task, you can expect the translated text in the target language not only to match the source text in terms of content, but also to read like an original text rather than a translation. This is because translating is not just about bridging purely linguistic or grammatical differences between the source language and the target language, but also about taking into account cultural, social, historical and geographical characteristics of both language areas and incorporating them into the translation. And that’s exactly what makes a good translation, no matter whether it’s a private letter, a website, a technical data sheet or an instruction manual.

When it comes to the translation of judicial or official documents from or into German, professional translators need to have an additional qualification: in addition to linguistic qualifications and personal suitability, all competent Germany courts require proof of a sound knowledge of German legal terminology.

General translations

You need to have a text, document, website, etc. translated from English into German or vice versa?

General translations can be charged either per word or according to the number of standard lines (norm lines) in the target text. One standard line comprises 55 characters (including spaces). In either case, the price of the translation varies depending on the file type (editable or non-editable), subject area, text length, degree of difficulty and urgency. For this reason, the actual effort can only be assessed and a cost estimate provided after having reviewed the source text.

Certified translations

You have to submit the translation of an official document to an authority or court in Germany or abroad?

In this case you will need to have the translation done by a state-certified translator who is authorized to confirm the accuracy of the translation and thus make it an official document recognized by public offices, authorities and courts.

Certified translations are required, for example, for residence permits  • driver’s licenses • court judgments • certificates of registration • birth, marriage, and death certificates • identity cards • passports • citizenship certificates • university degrees • contracts • certificates • etc.

The translation and certification of an official document is usually charged on the basis of a fixed price depending on the length and the nature of the text, i.e., whether it contains passages that are handwritten and/or difficult to read. Additional costs may arise if the translation is very urgent.

So, to receive a free quote that already includes the certification fee and the shipping costs, please fill in the contact form or send an e-mail to mail@elke-lubberich.de with a full and clearly legible scan or photo of the document to be translated. Once I have received your payment via PayPal or bank transfer, I will complete the translation within a few days and send you the translated and certified document by registered mail. If requested, I will certainly be pleased to send you a preliminary draft of the translated document by e-mail first, thus enabling you to check the transcription of the text, e.g., handwritten passages that may be difficult to read.

Editing & Proofreading

Putting your thoughts down on paper is hard enough – in a foreign language even harder than in your native tongue. Since, regardless of the content, orthographic errors and linguistic flaws will always have a negative impact on the quality of the text.

So why not leave the fine-tuning to me? I will take care of correct spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure. Your text will become more readable and get the recognition it deserves.

Both editing and proofreading involve correcting errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation, and pointing out inconsistencies within the text. On top of this, proofreading also includes the use of consistent spelling and stylistic optimization – without, of course, changing the content of the text.

Prices for editing and proofreading are usually calculated per page and depend on the language, text type, and urgency. For this reason, a free quote can only be provided after reviewing the text.
